Why do I have to pay for digital access?

Stars and Stripes operates largely on the revenue it earns from its reader and advertisers. In fact, we have charged for our content as far back as WWI. Being largely self-funded is actually one of several protections that ensure Stars and Stripes content is independent, fair and balanced. As much as possible, we provide content free, or at a minimal cost to our readers. The continuing migration from print to reading in a digital format, combined with the downsizing of the military community as a result of sequester, have made it no longer possible to provide all digital content at no cost.

We firmly believe our armed forces deserve a reliable, independent news source that reports on military matters of importance and interest.  This has been Stars and Stripes’ sole mission for decades and a source of great pride.
